Tumpa Das, age 29, waits before the cremation of a dead body in a furnace in a crematorium in the Baruipur Panchayat area in South 24-Parganas district of Purandarpur Mahashamshan, about 39 km south of Kolkata, India, on November 20, 2024. For the last 10 years, after her father's death, she is in charge of the crematorium. This woman, a Dom, single-handedly handles the work typically dominated by men.
