Nepal Marks 303rd National Unification Day And Prithivi Jayanti
Nepali Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli (in blue blazer) and Rajendra Lingden (center) arrive at a venue to mark the 303rd birth anniversary of Prithivi Narayan Shah, founder of modern Nepal, in Kathmandu, Nepal, on January 11, 2025. Prithvi Narayan Shah is born on January 7, 1723, as the first child of Nara Bhupal Shah and Kaushalyawati in the Gorkha Palace. He ascends to the throne of the Gorkha Kingdom on April 3, 1743, and starts the unification of Nepal. He is credited for moving the royal seat of power from Gorkha to Kathmandu. Before the unification, Nepal is divided into 52 principalities. King Prithvi Narayan Shah becomes successful in expanding Nepal's borders to the Tista River in the east to the Chepe River in the west. After his death, his successors further expand Nepal's western borders to Kangada. (Photo by Subaas Shrestha/NurPhoto)
