Vegetable Gardens At Nowa Huta Prison In Krakow

In Krakow, Poland, on August 27, 2025, beetroots grow in the vegetable garden in the men's ward, tended by inmates at the Nowa Huta Prison. Thanks to a partnership between Krakow's Municipal Greenery Authority and the Krakow Remand Prison, inmates cultivate vegetable gardens on prison grounds as part of an urban gardening program. The garden runs for three years in the women's ward, and since last year also in the men's ward, where since 2025 vegetables grow alongside flowers. In addition to gardening, inmates also participate in other projects such as building hedgehog houses and insect hotels. The initiative is designed to teach responsibility and care, while also providing meaningful ways to spend time. Participation is voluntary, and all harvests belong to those who work in the gardens.
