Vegetable Gardens At Nowa Huta Prison In Krakow
In Krakow, Poland, on August 27, 2025, a wall with razor wire and the Polish flag stands at the Nowa Huta Prison. Thanks to a partnership between Krakow's Municipal Greenery Authority and the Krakow Remand Prison, inmates cultivate vegetable gardens on prison grounds as part of an urban gardening program. The garden runs for three years in the women's ward and, since last year, also in the men's ward, where vegetables grow alongside flowers since 2025. In addition to gardening, inmates participate in other projects such as building hedgehog houses and insect hotels. The initiative is designed to teach responsibility and care while also providing meaningful ways to spend time. Participation is voluntary, and all harvests belong to those who work in the gardens.
