Nepal Celebrates Festival Of “Paha Chahre” The Annual Chariot Festival Praying For Good Health And Protection From Calamities

Sunita Dangol, Acting Mayor of Kathmandu, participates in the annual ''Paha Chahre'' chariot festival in Kathmandu, Nepal, on March 19, 2026. The festival involves praying for good health and protection from calamities while parading the idols of deities in the ancient city square. The idols of Ganesh, Bhairav, Bhagwati, and Ashta Matrika are honored with a special chariot procession in the old marketplace of Ason in Kathmandu. In the local Newa: language, ''Paha'' means guest and ''Chahre'' means Chaturdashi. This day is also known as ''Pishach Chaturdashi.'' The Newa: community traditionally celebrates the Chaturdashi of Chaitra Krishna Paksha with joy and excitement. (Photo by Subaas Shrestha/NurPhoto)
