Nepal’s Former PM KP Sharma Oli’s CPN-UML Announces More Protest Plans Demanding His Release
Prithvi Subba Gurung, former Communication Minister and Vice-Chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal- Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML), arrives at the party office to attend the party secretariat meeting in Lalitpur, Nepal, on March 31, 2026. The meeting discusses plans for protests demanding the release of party chairman KP Sharma Oli. A series of protests and programs are announced in response to Oli's arrest. The meeting criticizes Oli's arrest and decides to proceed with organized protest activities. Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak were arrested in Bhaktapur on March 28, shortly after Balendra Shah assumed office. The UML describes these arrests as politically motivated. The party also claims that the government deployed police to suppress peaceful protests against these arrests. A large protest is planned in Kathmandu on April 25, with district-level mobilizations occurring up to April 8. (Photo by Subaas Shrestha/NurPhoto)
