Nepal’s Former PM KP Sharma Oli’s CPN-UML Announces More Protest Plans Demanding His Release

Party secretariat members of the Communist Party of Nepal- Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) convene a meeting at the party office in Lalitpur, Nepal, on March 31, 2026. The meeting announces a series of protests and programs in response to the arrest of party chair and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. The arrests of Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak in Bhaktapur on March 28, shortly after Balendra Shah assumed office, are described by UML as politically motivated. The party alleges that the government deployed police to suppress peaceful protests organized in opposition to these arrests. UML plans a protest in Kathmandu on April 25, with district-level mobilizations scheduled up to April 8. (Photo by Subaas Shrestha/NurPhoto)
