The Desolata Of Canosa

About 400 women sing the hymn of the Desolata in a procession through the streets of Canosa di Puglia, Italy, on April 4, 2026, during the Desolata ritual on Holy Saturday. On the morning of Holy Saturday, a large choir composed exclusively of women with veiled faces and dressed in black--some of whom go barefoot--sings a traditional hymn, the Stabat Mater, based on the lyrics of Jacopone da Todi. Moving slowly with their faces hidden, they participate in a ritual that involves the entire community. (Photo by Davide Pischettola/NurPhoto)
