Rising Sea Level On The North Coast Of The West Java, Indonesia
A man rides a motorcycle along a coast affected by abrasion at Cemarajaya Village in the Cibuaya district of Karawang, West Java, Indonesia, on April 13, 2026. Approximately 8 kilometers of coastline are considered at risk, with damage worsening over several decades. Over the past 25 years, at least 85 hectares of land and more than 300 houses in the village have been lost due to sea level rise and tidal flooding. Various mitigation efforts, including the planting of mangroves, have been undertaken along the coastal stretch. However, these rehabilitation programs have faced challenges due to the area's geographic conditions and strong ocean currents. (Photo by Agoes Rudianto/NurPhoto)
