Rising Sea Level On The North Coast Of The West Java, Indonesia
Teenagers play volleyball at a coast affected by erosion at Cemarajaya Village in the Cibuaya district of Karawang, West Java, Indonesia, on April 13, 2026. Roughly 8 kilometers of coastline are now considered at risk, with damage steadily worsening over the past several decades. Over the last 25 years, at least 85 hectares of land and more than 300 houses in the village have been lost to the impacts of sea level rise and tidal flooding. Various mitigation efforts have been undertaken, including the planting of mangroves along the muddy and sandy coastal stretch. These rehabilitation programs have yielded limited results, hampered by the area's geographic conditions and persistent strong ocean currents. (Photo by Agoes Rudianto/NurPhoto)
