An artisan creates an idol of the Hindu Goddess Kali and Durga in Kumartuli, the potter's village in Kolkata, India, on June 8, 2026. Kumartuli is a renowned traditional potters' quarter located in North Kolkata along the Hooghly River, known for its long-standing craft of sculpting clay idols of Hindu deities. The name originates from the Bengali words ''Kumor'' (potter) and ''tuli'' (locality). This cultural hub, with its network of narrow lanes, is the primary source of more than 4,000 Durga idols worshipped during Bengal's Durga Puja, a festival recognized by UNESCO. These artworks are supplied across India and exported to communities worldwide. (Photo by Debajyoti Chakraborty/NurPhoto)
