Corruption in Romania
Catalin Chereches is the mayor of Baia Mare and currently under investigation for almost a dozen accounts of corruption. Chereches was detained in 2016 by DNA, the countries anti corruption directorate after having been caught in the act of receiving alsmot 13 thousand Lei (7500 Euros) in cash. Despite the investigations against him and a reputation for being corrupt Chereches won the local election in 2016 by more than 70 per cent while imprisoned. (Photo by Jaap Arriens/NurPhoto)
