Development of Nursing-Care Robots in Japan

Demonstration of the nursing-care robot HUG (mobility support robot) during the press conference development and Implementation of Nursing-Care Robots in Japan at The Foreign Press Center Japan (FPCJ), Tokyo 2 February 2018, Japan. Hug is designed to support people who face mobility issues, such as those issues that come hand in hand with old age. From bed to wheelchair, or wheelchair to toilet seat; Hug assists when staying in a position or in situations where standing for a period of time is required, such as when getting dressed. Over 25% of Japan’s population are seniors. With the population structure changing rapidly in recent years due to a declining birthrate and aging population, and the lack of workers and heavy labor involved in the nursing-care industry, development and adoption of robots for use in nursing care has been progressing.
