The Ituren Carnival 2019
One of the characters participating in the Carnival of Ituren (Navarra), Spain, on 28 January 2019 with Shotgun Shotguns. Ituren is a small town of just over 500 inhabitants, is located in the Alto Bidasoa region or in Navarra. The origin of this celebration is uncertain, but it has many similarities to other celebrations where masks and cowbells are the main elements. It is believed that its origin can be linked to celebrations or ancestral rites of change of seasonal cycle, of celebration of the winter solstice. It is one of the most striking masques in the north of the Iberian Peninsula. The "Joaldunak" (its translation is: "those who carry cowbells") are the main characters of the celebration. On Monday morning, they march the "Joaldunak" of Zubieta to Ituren (about 3 km is the distance that separates both locations) where they will meet the "Joaldunak" of Ituren. While the plaza delpueblo has been taken by young "mozorros" of the puerblo with provocative and wild costumes. Until the "joaldunak" throw them out. (Photo by Joaquin Gomez Sastre/NurPhoto)
