Traditional Celebrations On Shrove Sunday

People gathered around 12.5 m tall bonfire on Shrove Sunday, also known as Cheesefare Sunday or Forgiveness Sunday, in the village of Dobric, near Dimitrovgrad, Bulgaria on 10 March 2019. Traditionally on this day Bulgarians burn fires to banish the evil and protect themselves from illness. They sing and dance around the fire rejoicing and welcome the coming spring.Exactly seven weeks prior to Orthodox Easter is the start of the longest period in the year in which Christians abandon eating any food of animal origin - Great Lent. At dinnertime on Shrovetide Sunday eastern orthodox ask forgiveness for their wrongdoings throughout the year. With forgiveness, anybody will begin the big trial of fasting with a clean heart., Dobrich, Dimitrovgrad, Bulgaria on March 10, 2019 (Photo by Hristo Rusev/NurPhoto)
