Traveling In Peru And Bolivia
The Amantani island, in the heart of Titicaca lake, nowadays is still able to hold most of its ancient way of life. Around 4,000 people lives in the island that in Inca times was considered sacred and forbidden to be inhabited, according to nowadays inhabitants. The two tallest hills of the island, at 400m above the lake, hold Pachatata and Pachamama temples. Those are opened only once a year for inhabitants-only ceremonies for good crops. In recent years tourism became an important source of income for the majority of farmers and shepherds of the island (Photo by Gustavo Basso/NurPhoto)
