Sanctuary Project: 17 Sapphire Disks To The Moon

Close-up of the prototype sapphire disk. For the fiftieth anniversary of the Apollo 17 to the Moon, scientist Benoit Faiveley and others launched the 'Sanctuary Project'. They proposed to send with the Alina lunar explorer a 'Lunar Vault' containing 17 sapphire discs with the knowledge of humankind at the beginning of the XXIth century. They described it as 'An Eternal Lunar Vault for Humanity'. Each sapphire disc contains more than 3 Gigapixels. Some discs and the 'prototype disc' were exposed at the Quai Des Savoirs in Toulouse.
