Portuguese traditional-style sidewalk - Calada Portuguesa
A patterned pavement paying tribute to the late Portuguese fado singer Amalia Rodrigues is pictured at the Alfama typical neighborhood in Lisbon, Portugal on August 14, 2019. (File image) The Portuguese sidewalk (Calada Portuguesa), dates back to the mid 19th century, it is a traditional-style sidewalk used in many of the country pedestrian areas and in former Portuguese colonies such as Macau and Brazil. Is made with small pieces of stones arranged in a pattern or image, usually used on sidewalks, but it is in squares and atriums that this art finds its deepest expression.
