Rising Demand For Cremation Services In Philippines
Crematorium workers wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) operate a crematory chamber in a crematorium in Pasay City, Philippines on May 12, 2020. Crematorium workers, with the daily shift from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., often extend beyond working hours as the demand for cremation services rises. An average of eight bodies, suspected and confirmed COVID-19 cases included, are brought to the facility every day. Fearing that they might infect their families, workers take extra precautions and choose to temporarily stay at the crematorium instead of going home. As Metro Manila and some parts of the Philippines remain on enhanced community quarantine (ECQ), traditional funeral rites are denied for deaths linked to coronavirus while wakes and burials limited to immediate family members are permitted for deaths not related to coronavirus.(Photo by Lisa Marie David/NurPhoto)
