The Civil War In Northern Sri Lanka

The remains of the improvised armored bulldozer (that was used in place of a battle tank) belonging to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) during the First Battle of Elephant Pass located at the Elephant Pass, Northern Province, Sri Lanka on August 10, 2017. The bulldozer is part of the Hasalaka War Hero War Memorial (Hasalaka Gamini War Memorial) which honors Corporal Gamini Kularatne of 6 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) who was killed on 14 July 1991 while preventing the bulldozer from ramming into the Elephant Pass Army garrison. Corporal Kularatne used two hand grenades to kill the four-man crew inside the bulldozer and disabled the armored vehicle before being killed. Elephant Pass is a causeway which is the main gateway to the Jaffna Peninsula. Due to its strategic importance, army camps protecting the pass were attacked several times during the civil war.
