This ancient Hindu temple dedicated to lord Murugan and is the fourth abode of Murugan among six abodes (Arupadaiveedugal) of Lord Murugan. As per Hindu legend, Muruga, the son of Shiva, extolled the meaning of the Pranava Mantra (Om) to his father at this place and hence attained the name Swaminathaswamy.
