It is currently serving as a site of great historical and religious significance, believed to be where Lord Murugan battled and triumphed over the demon Surapadma. This temple stands as one of the Six Abodes of Murugan. It was once occupied by the Dutch East India Company from 1646 to 1648 amidst their conflict with the Portuguese.

This ancient Hindu temple dedicated to lord Murugan and is said to be the site of the battle between Lord Murugan and Soorapadman and the place where Lord Muruga conquered the demon Surapadma (Sooran). This temple is one of the Six Abodes of Murugan.

Detail of the Swamimalai Murugan Temple (Arulmigu Swaminatha Swamy Temple) located in Swamimalai, Tamil Nadu, India. This ancient Hindu temple dedicated to lord Murugan and is the fourth abode of Murugan among six abodes (Arupadaiveedugal) of Lord Murugan. As per Hindu legend, Muruga, the son of Shiva, extolled the meaning of the Pranava Mantra (Om) to his father at this place and hence attained the name Swaminathaswamy. The temple is believed to be in existence from the Sangam period from 2nd century BC and was believed to have been modified and rebuilt by Parantaka Chola I. The temple was greatly damaged during the Anglo-French war between Hyder Ali and British in 1740.

The figure will be used in the upcoming Sooran Por festival (also called as Sooran Poor, Sooran Porr, Soorasamharam, Surasamharam) is a re-enactment of the Battle of Lord Murugan and Soorapathman. According to legend, Lord Murugan defeated the demon Soorapathman (Sooran) and his army with the sacred Vel (lance) given to him by his mother. Lord Murugan fought for six days, and on the last day he liberated the Devas (Gods) from Asuras (demons). Sooran Por is held to celebrate the victory on the sixth day at dusk.
