Daily Life In Canada
The sign with the logo at entrance to the new Native Child and Family Services of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The new Native Child and Family Services of Toronto consolidates social and culture-based services for aboriginal children and families. The challenge was to create a place that would reconnect urban aboriginals with nature in the heart of the city. Many aboriginals need help with alcohol abuse and drug addiction and this new building offers counseling. Aboriginal people represent approximately 3% of the Canadian population but they now make up approximately 16% of Canada's federal offender population. The number of incarcerated Aboriginal inmates in federal and provincial facilities, particularly in the Prairies, is still increasing though many of the crimes committed are minor offences. Aboriginal communities are faced with numerous social and economic disadvantages, resulting in a correlation with high levels of Aboriginal incarceration. Poverty and reliance on social assistance are prevalent in Aboriginal communities where approximately half of the children live in poverty. (Photo by Creative Touch Imaging Ltd./NurPhoto)
