St. Francis Of Assisi Day In Mexico

A priest outside the Holy Family Parish in Colonia Roma, Mexico City, blesses a dog on the occasion of St Francis of Assisi Day, the patron saint of animals. According to legend, St. Francis of Assisi had a gift with animals, quoted in the anonymous text Florecillas de San Francisco, dating from the 14th century. In that story, a wolf terrorised the village of Gubbio, devouring animals and people, until St. Francis spoke with him and made him a friend. From that moment on, according to tradition, the wolf lived among the people, who looked after it and fed it. (Photo by Gerardo Vieyra/NurPhoto)
