Honoring the ancestors on Emancipation Day in Washington, DC
People attend an event at Mount Zion and Female Union Band Cemeteries on Emancipation Day. This day commemorates the abolition of slavery in the District of Columbia on April 16, 1862, and the resulting emancipation of more than 3000 people on this day. The two cemeteries are the oldest African-American burial grounds in the District, and the site of thousands of graves. (Photo by Allison Bailey/NurPhoto)
