Honoring the ancestors on Emancipation Day in Washington, DC
A headstone and toys mark a child's grave at an event on Emancipation Day at Mount Zion and Female Union Band Society cemetery. These two cemeteries are the oldest burial grounds for African-Americans in Washington, and form a single park in Georgetown. Emancipation Day commemorates the abolition of slavery in the District of Columbia on April 16, 1862, and the resulting emancipation of more than 3000 people on this day.
