Refugees And Migrants Heading To The Greek Borders

Male asylum seekers as seen in abandoned old train carriages near Thessaloniki city on their way to follow the Balkan Route towards Northern Macedonia. From the wagons they jump onto cargo trains which takes them to Idomeni, the borders with N. Macedonia. They wait and form groups to cross the borders in the mountains and reach other European countries like Germany, France, Sweden etc via the Balkan route. Refugees and migrants arrive at the railway station from Turkey after a long multi day journey on foot following marked routes in social media or following the rails and highway but others via smugglers paying sometimes 2500 euro to move them from Turkey here. Some of them complained for pushbacks from the N. Macedonian police after treating them violently and beating them. At Idomeni there is the station and the fenced part of the borders which are guarded by Greek police and European Frontex forces. Most of the group were from Afghanistan, some from Syria, Iraq, Palestine, Pakistan, and Morocco. The flows of people arriving from Turkey are increasing every day as the refugee and migrant crisis is still ongoing. Thessaloniki, Greece on October 2022 (Photo by Nicolas Economou/NurPhoto)
