Total lunar eclipse
A total lunar eclipse turns the full moon a deep, coppery red in the western sky over North America. Total eclipses of the moon occur when the earth is positioned directly between the sun and moon, casting a shadow on the moon. When the moon is engulfed by the earth's shadow, it turns a coppery red as a result of refraction of the sun's rays around the earth. (Photo by Allison Bailey/NurPhoto)
