Cremation Along The Bagmati River In Pashupatinath

Relatives surround a terminally-ill elderly man who lies on a stretcher that had just been brought to the cremation ghats in Pashupatinath by ambulance. In a few moments when he dies his body will then be cremated at the bank of the Bagmati River at Pashupatinath in Nepal. According to Hindu religion and traditions the dead must be cremated. The bodies are cremated according to custom and the ashes and remains are swept into the holy waters. The Bagmati runs into the Ganges further South and is considered equally holy to Hindus. The complex at Pashupatinath is the holiest Hindu site in Nepal. (Photo by Creative Touch Imaging Ltd./NurPhoto)
