First British astronaut to blast off to the ISS

ITALY Sardinia -- 20 Mar 2012 -- Japanese astronaut Norishige Kanai with ESA astronauts Tim Peake and Thomas Pesquet discover cave wonderland during their cave familiarization. The ESA’s cave training prepares astronauts to work as an international team in real exploration conditions. Sending astronauts underground to survive and explore Sardinian caves in Italy for almost a week is just one element of their long training. The Sardinian caves are isolated from the outside world. The astronauts need to get used to confined spaces, minimal privacy, technical challenges and limited equipment and supplies for hygiene and comfort - just like in space! Tim Peake is the first British astronaut to visit the ISS and will be launched together with commander Yuri Malenchenko and NASA astronaut Tim Kopra on the 15 Dec 2015. The trio will then spend six months working and living on the International Space Station -- Picture by V Crobu/Atlas Photo Archive/ESA
