Residents of the southern edge of Mexico City attend Mass and enjoy enchiladas at the Sanctuary of the Lord of Calvary, the former Convent of Culhuacan, and the Parish of Saint John the Evangelist in celebration of Corpus Christi Thursday, also known as Mule Day in Mexico, on June 4, 2026. Corpus Christi Day, originating in the 13th century in Belgium, is observed 60 days after Easter Sunday to proclaim and increase faith in Jesus Christ, as per the Catholic Church. The tradition of dressing children in indigenous clothing began with people from the outskirts of the city who would wear their finest clothes on holidays and travel to the city center with decorated mules carrying goods to sell at fairs, also attending Mass to have their food and mules blessed. This tradition also commemorates Juan Diego, regarded as a symbol of the indigenous Christian communities of Mexico.
