Manaus, 3rd Oct 2023 - Derli Leao and his mother live on a floating house, which is very common in the Amazon region. However, with the water level lower than ever, their home and the attached bar have been sitting on mud since early September. The lack of customers, who used to provide a gross income of $400 per day on weekends, has made it impossible for him to employ six people. Now, he has no choice but to carry out the necessary repairs on the property's floor.

Manaus, 3rd Oct 2023 - A mixed area of fields and Amazon rainforest is burning uncontrollably, while nearby residents attempt to contain the flames. In October alone, INPE (National Institute for Space Research) detected 3,060 fire outbreaks in the state of Amazonas, at the peak of the worst drought ever experienced by the Amazon rainforest. This crisis has positioned the state as the second-largest victim of these intentional fires, a relatively new issue in this region, located in the heart of the Amazon.

A protester holds a cardboard depicting Jeff Bezos and reading 'In 202, my wealth is estimated at $200billions'. Thousands protesters marched again against the 'Global Security Law' bill promoted by French President Macron and his majority and for more means for the public health system and hospitals. The 'Global Security Law' bill will forbid anyone to photograph or film police members if not flouted : transgressors could be condemned up to one year in jail and a €45.000 fine. The bill also plans to generalize facial recognition in pubic spaces as in China. The French Rights Defender, the French National Commission on Human Rights (administrative bodies) and the UN Human Rights body condemn the bill as it will be a violation of internationals treaties signed and ratified by France, the Universal Human Rights Declaration, rule of law, etc. They fear a chilling effect on people wanting to use their right to protest, right to personal privacy... and on journalists, photographers, videographers. Volunteer group composed of veterinarians and biologists, coordinated by the guide and tourism agent Eduarda Fernandes, work to rescue animals injured by the Pantanal wildfires and mitigate the effects of drought and lack of water in Pocone, Mato Grosso, Brazil, on August 28, 2020. Last Friday the group composed of 7 people from several parts of the country saved an adult 200kg tapir that had critical burns on its legs, with bone exposure. Sedated in order not to resist, the animal was taken to Eduarda's father-in-law's inn, where he was medicated, cleaned and bandaged. In the same morning she was taken to the Veterinary Hospital of UFMT (Hovet), where she is being cared for; without first aid and hospital care the animal would die ''without a doubt and with great suffering'', according to veterinarian Felipe Batista, 30 years old The brazilian Pantanal - one of the largest tropical floodplains in the world - is suffering since the end of July with the worst wildfires in its registered history. More than 12%, or 16.500 sq. km (almost the size of Kuweit) has already been burned, and the situation may get better only in October, when it's expected to rain.
