It was possible to see elephants eating garbage in a garbage pit in the Kaduruwela area of Polonnaruwa district, which is 224 kilometers from Colombo city, and the skeletal remains of an elephant that died due to eating polythene at a nearby place. Sri Lanka is also the country where most elephants die in the world. Elephant-human conflict is the main reason for this. Apart from that, many elephants die from eating garbage. In the last year (2022), 433 elephants have died in Sri Lanka. Apart from littering, shootings, traps, and road accidents have also contributed to the increasing number of elephant deaths.
