In Nanning, China, on April 28, 2024, the ''sky vegetable garden + garden'' on the roof of a primary school is providing teachers and students with the opportunity to experience farming. The rooftop sky garden, which is divided into various ''grid plots'' each planted with different plants such as water spinach, eggplant, loofah, and chili, is becoming increasingly popular among the students. The school has also established a labor education base on the roof, where the planting process is environmentally friendly and the farming method is safe. During the labor experience classes, teachers are leading students in planting vegetables and fruits, teaching them farming knowledge, and allowing them to experience the joy of harvesting.

Canna indica is a plant species native to Mexico, Central America, South America, and the West Indies. It is also known as African arrowroot, Indian shot, edible canna, purple arrowroot, and Sierra Leone arrowroot, and belongs to the family Cannaceae. The plant has naturalized in many tropical regions and is difficult to remove. It is also naturalized in the southeastern United States (Florida, Texas, Louisiana, and South Carolina), and much of Europe, sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, and Oceania. The flowers are hermaphroditic. It has been a minor food crop cultivated by indigenous peoples of the Americas for thousands of years. The largest flowers are zygomorphic and threefold. Canna indica has been included in the Global Invasive Species Database and has been declared invasive in several places. This photo was taken in Tehatta, West Bengal, India, on April 18, 2024.

The tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is classified as a fruit--more specifically, a berry--due to its botanical characteristics, although it is commonly used as a vegetable in culinary contexts. It is edible, shiny, and smooth. In January 2024, Japanese scientists Yuri Aratani and Takuya Uemura, molecular biologists at Saitama University, along with their colleagues, recorded real-time footage of plants communicating with each other for the first time. To capture this communication, the team used leaves cut from tomato plants and Arabidopsis thaliana. The footage revealed that plants release airborne compounds, akin to scents, which form a fine mist serving as a medium for communication. The researchers believe the plants use this mechanism to warn each other of imminent threats. For instance, the video demonstrated that when a healthy plant detects danger, it produces calcium through its leaves. Tomatoes are a rich source of nutrients and phytochemicals, including lycopene, vitamin C, and other antioxidants. They also contain phenolic compounds such as hydroxycinnamic acids, flavonoids, and chlorogenic acid. Several studies suggest that tomatoes may offer health benefits, including potential anticancer properties.
