After the resignation of Enda Kenny as Leader of Fine Gael in May 2017, Varadkar announced his candidacy for party leader. Today, on 2nd of June 2017, it was announced that Varadkar had been elected Leader of Fine Gael, winning 51 of the 73 votes in the parliamentary party.
