Lord Shiva devotees , came around the country by walking barefoot, this time of the year, often accompanied with blaring music in praise of the Hindu deity. The kanvadias, as they are called, usually carry two pitchers of holy water from river Ganga (gangajal) on either side of a pole balanced on the shoulder. An indian woman carries pitchers of water from a temporary water conserving sand well, during a hot day, in the outskirts of Allahabad on April 10,2016. Despite improvements over the past few years, accessing clean water is a big challenge in rural India. According to the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) estimates, 14% of the households reported shortage of drinking water at some point during the year. Two years of back-to-back drought have meant Indias reservoirs are three-quarters of the past decades average. Water scarcity could hurt crops, worsen price pressures and dent growth in Asias third-biggest economy.

Galichnik, Macedonia-- The rituals include the carrying of a pitcher decorated with coins and flowers and many other symbolic items. Hundreds of people gathered to attend the annual wedding festival in the Macedonian village of Galichnik to witness, for the first time, a double wedding. The festival is a chance for the decedents of villagers to reenact folk wedding traditions in this depopulated region. Currently the village has only two year-round residents, although it is a popular summer vacation spot. Photo by Jodi Hilton/NurPhoto

EN: Kumbh Mela is a mass Hindu pilgrimage of faith in which Hindus in India gather to bathe in a sacred river. It is the world's largest religious gathering. It is held every third year at one of the four places by rotation: Haridwar, Allahabad (Prayag), Nasik and Ujjain. Thus the Kumbh Mela is held at each of these four places every twelfth year. Ardh ("Half") Kumbh Mela is held at only two places, Haridwar and Allahabad, every sixth year. The rivers at these four places are: the Ganges (Ganga) at Haridwar, the confluence (Sangam) of the Ganges and the Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati at Allahabad, the Godawari at Nasik, and the Shipra at Ujjain. Kumbh means a pitcher and Mela means fair in Hindi. The pilgrimage is held for about one and a half months at each of these four places where it is believed in Hinduism that drops of nectar fell from the Kumbh carried by gods after the sea was churned.
