Residents cleaning waterways in the labor-intensive Drainage Normation program in Ujuna Village, Palu City, Central Sulawesi Province, Indonesia on November 16, 2020. The local government collaborates with one of the State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) to carry out a labor-intensive program that in addition to creating an environment cleaners, also to help residents in the region who have lost their jobs as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) said that the total workforce in Indonesia reached more than 131 million out of 256 million people. During the COVID-19 pandemic, as many as 82 percent of the workforce experienced a decline in income, even though a Jobstreet Indonesia survey stated that only around 54 percent of the workforce was severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Of the affected workers, 35 percent of them are permanently laid off and 19 percent are temporarily suspended. Jobstreet Indonesia predicts, by the end of 2020, the number of unemployed people in Indonesia could increase to 4 to 5 million so that it will reach 11 million.
