Different colored pashmina yarns form a colorful pattern on a handloom where a special shawl is being woven at a home workshop on the outskirts of Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 14, 2026. The Kani shawl weaving is a complex and rare craftsmanship in Kashmiri weaving culture, where patterns and designs inspired by nature are woven to create one of the most expensive and delicate shawls. The Kashmiri word 'Kani' translates to 'small sticks,' which are used by craftsmen to interlace various colored threads of pashmina on handlooms. Pashmina wool is obtained from Pashmina goats that live in the Himalayan region of Ladakh, Kashmir. Artisans and traders in the Kani shawl industry of Indian Kashmir are experiencing a slowdown in international demand, with clients reducing or postponing bulk orders. Uncertainty over shipping routes, rising costs, and market instability linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran have impacted the export sector.

In Mittenwald, Bavaria, on September 7, 2024, the village witnesses its annual spectacle as a sea of sheep fills the streets, returning from their summer pastures. The bleating herd, guided by shepherds, makes its way through the heart of the violin-making village, with curious onlookers lining the streets. Locals and visitors, some snapping photos, others simply observing, stand shoulder to shoulder as the flock passes through the town, their woolly forms nearly covering the entire street. Colorful buildings, adorned with traditional murals and alpine details, form a backdrop to the event. The village, which sees this tradition carried out for generations, comes alive with the movement of the sheep and the excitement of the crowd. As the herd makes its way toward the Schafstadl above the Groblalm, the event marks the end of the summer season and continues a tradition that binds the community to its pastoral roots. This celebration of rural life, marked by the movement of the flock through Mittenwald's historic streets, showcases the enduring relationship between the village and the surrounding landscape. The event serves as a reminder of the rhythm of life in the Alps, where history, nature, and community converge.

On September 7, 2024, in Mittenwald, Germany, the annual sheep drive sees the flock return from the high summer pastures. The narrow streets of the violin-making village bustle with the bleating of sheep, their soft, woolly forms moving in unison as they are guided toward the Schafstadl above the Groblalm. Among the crowd of sheep, a young shepherd boy, donned in traditional attire, confidently steers the herd with a wooden staff in hand, his small figure blending into the larger pastoral scene. The houses along the route, adorned with colorful flowers, frame this timeless tradition, connecting the rhythms of modern village life with ancient pastoral practices. The young shepherds, alongside their older counterparts, play an important role, their participation a symbol of tradition being passed from one generation to the next. In the bright midday sun, this scene captures more than just a pastoral moment; it reflects the essence of rural Bavarian life, where community, tradition, and nature intersect in a display of both continuity and culture.
