Hamed Esmaeilion (left), a leader in the movement against the Islamic theocracy in Iran, and Iranian music icon Googoosh, talk backstage at a rally against the regime at the Lincoln Memorial on the anniversary of the 1979 revolution. Thousands of demonstrators from across the eastern half of the United States called on the Iranian diaspora to unite to topple the regime and demanded world leaders do more to isolate the current government. This continues protests that began with the death of Mahsa Zhina Amini in custody of Iran’s “morality” police and quickly became a movement against the regime.

Iranian and Ukrainian communities joined forces to demand free, democratic government in both of their countries, marching to the Iranian Interests Section and Ukrainian embassy in Washington, DC. Demonstrators marched to support protests that began in Iran after the death of Mahsa Amini and in solidarity with the Ukrainian people as they fight the Russian invasion.

Demonstrators with pre-revolutionary Iranian flags attend a rally at the Lincioln Memorial in support of Iranian protesters. The rally was one of many worldwide also calling for justice for Ukraine International Airlines flight 752, which was shot down by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps when they mistook it for an American missile. Their attempt to retaliate for the Trump Administration's assassination of Qasem Solemani killed 176 people on January 8, 2020.

Protestors showed their solidarity with anti-government demonstrators in Iran and their support of a national uprising of the Iranian people. Protesters called for a regime change for social justice and freedom and democracy in Iran. There was a also a call that power in Iran be returned to Reza Pahlavi, the former Crown Prince of Iran and the last heir apparent to the defunct throne of the Imperial State of Iran and the current head of the exiled House of Pahlavi.
