A Renaissance fresco depicting the stigmatization of St. Francis of Assisi is seen in the covered loggia of the Sanctuary of La Verna, Arezzo, Tuscany, Italy, on April 9, 2026. The composition shows Francis kneeling in his brown Franciscan habit in a wooded landscape, arms raised in ecstasy, as a seraph -- a winged Christ-like figure radiating golden light -- descends from above, with five red rays connecting to the saint's hands, feet, and side. A second figure meditates in a rocky recess at right. Gilded Corinthian pilasters frame the scene, which commemorates the mystical event of September 14, 1224, that occurred on this mountain.

A wide interior view of the Chapel of the Stigmata at the Franciscan Sanctuary of La Verna, Arezzo, Tuscany, Italy, on April 9, 2026, shows the spatial relationship between the 15th-century inlaid wooden choir stalls, the polychrome geometric tile floor, and the monumental della Robbia glazed terracotta altarpiece filling the apse. Fresh flowers adorn the white marble altar inscribed ''Deus Meus et Omnia,'' while a circular mixed-rose wreath marks the floor plaque of the stigmatization site. The absence of visitors and the soft directional light highlight the chapel's concentration of Renaissance sacred art within a space of continuous active devotion since the 13th century.

An exterior view of the Franciscan Sanctuary of La Verna (Santuario della Verna) in the Casentino mountains, Arezzo province, Tuscany, Italy, on April 9, 2026. The wide irregular-flagstone courtyard opens toward a cluster of stone medieval buildings, including a small open bell tower with a single bell, multiple chimneys, and a backdrop of bare late-spring woodland. Two visitors are barely visible resting on a low wall in the background. Founded in 1213 when St. Francis of Assisi received Monte della Verna as a gift from Count Orlando Cattani, the sanctuary is where the stigmatization of Francis took place in September 1224, making it a major destination of Catholic pilgrimage worldwide.
