Thaipusam is a Hindu festival celebrated mostly by the Tamil community. Devotees pray and make vows, and when the prayers are answered, they fulfill the vows by piercing parts of their body such as their cheeks, tongues, and backs before carrying a 'kavadi' or milk pots on a four-kilometer journey of faith.

Tamil Hindu priest splashes water on the face of a Hindu devotee before blessing him after the devotee completed the Kavadi Attam ritual (a ritual where he is pulled while dancing by hooks driven into his back as an act of penance) during the Vinayagar Ther Thiruvizha Festival in Ontario, Canada on July 23, 2006. Devotees prepare for the celebration by cleansing themselves through prayer, celibacy and fasting for 11 to 25 days before the festival. During this religious festival several devotees show their devotion by making offerings and by piercing their bodies with metal hooks and skewers.
