Based at NAS Jacksonville, VP-16 is the U.S. Navy's first Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Force (MPRF) squadron to achieve Initial Operational Capability with the P-8A Poseidon and to conduct the aircraft's first operational deployment. Operating under Commander, Task Force 67 (CTF-67), VP-16's mission at Sigonella focuses on maintaining regional stability, supporting NATO allies and regional partners, and contributing to the Common Operational Picture (COP) across the European theater. The P-8A Poseidon is a long-range, multi-mission maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft capable of broad-area maritime and littoral operations, with primary roles including Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), Anti-Surface Warfare (ASuW), and Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR), providing critical maritime domain awareness and fleet support.
