The Story Of A Female Cremator (Dom) Baruipur, West Bengal
Tumpa Das, age 29, opens the gate for cremating a dead body in a furnace inside a crematorium in the Baruipur Panchayat area in South 24-Parganas district of Purandarpur Mahashamshan, about 39 km south of Kolkata, India, on November 20, 2024. For the last 10 years, since her father's death, she is in charge of the crematorium. This woman, a Dom, single-handedly handles the work traditionally dominated by men. From registering the names of the deceased to managing the cremation, the work of the furnace is handled by this young woman alone. (Photo by Rupak De Chowdhuri/NurPhoto)
