Tumpa Das, age 29, closes the gate before cremating a dead body in a furnace inside a crematorium in the Baruipur Panchayat area in South 24-Pargana district of Purandarpur Mahashamshan, about 39 km south of Kolkata, India, on November 20, 2024. For the last 10 years, after her father's death, she is in charge of the crematorium. This woman Dom single-handedly handles the work typically dominated by men.
