Nepal Marks 303rd National Unification Day And Prithivi Jayanti
Rajendra Lingden, the former Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), Nepal's pro-monarch party, participates in a march on National Unification Day and the birth anniversary of Prithivi Narayan Shah, the founder of modern Nepal, on his 303rd birth anniversary in Kathmandu, Nepal, on January 11, 2025. Pro-monarchists offer a 108-foot (33-meter) long flower garland to the statue of Prithivi Narayan Shah on his birth anniversary in Kathmandu, Nepal, on January 11, 2025. Prithvi Narayan Shah is born on January 7, 1723, as the first child of Nara Bhupal Shah and Kaushalyawati in the Gorkha Palace. He ascends to the throne of the Gorkha Kingdom on April 3, 1743, and starts the unification of Nepal. He is credited with moving the royal seat of power from Gorkha to Kathmandu. Before the unification, Nepal is divided into 52 principalities. King Prithvi Narayan Shah successfully expands Nepal's borders from the Tista River in the east to the Chepe River in the west. After his death, his successors further expand Nepal's western borders to Kangada. (Photo by Subaas Shrestha/NurPhoto)
