Commemorative Ceremony For The Anniversary Of The Fosse Ardeatine Massacre
In Rome, Italy, on March 24, 2025, the 81st anniversary of the massacre at the Fosse Ardeatine is observed. The Ardeatine massacre occurs on March 24, 1944, when German Nazi occupation troops kill 335 civilians and Italian soldiers in Rome as a reprisal for the Via Rasella partisan attack conducted the previous day in central Rome against the SS Police Regiment Bozen. Subsequently, the Ardeatine Caves site (Fosse Ardeatine) is declared a Memorial Cemetery and National Monument, open daily to visitors. The tomb of Pietro Pappagallo, an Italian priest and anti-fascist who is a victim of the Fosse Ardeatine massacre, is also noted. He is awarded the gold medal for civil merit in memory.
