Drought In Northern Italy: The Surviving Rice Fields In Novara
Rice needs a lot of water for its life cycle and the area between Novara and Pavia has suffered a serious shortage. Fabrizio Rizzotti, a rice producer for 6 generations, estimates a reduction of about 70% of the harvest with the costs incurred entirely and this could put several producers in the area in difficulty. The very hot days and the lack of rainfall have created increasing difficulties for farmers and ranchers. Even some crops sown because they are better resistant to water shortages in this year of exceptional heat and drought have created problems. The water shortage in the Po river basin was not mitigated during the summer. After a consistent period of drought, the Po river and its basin have a water flow rate of less than normal. Drought is not an unusual phenomenon, but the frequency with which it recurs in recent years is also becoming worried about the impacts it has on animals, flora, and agricultural activities.
