Catholic parishioners are keeping alive the devotion and prayers to the Black Christ of Esquipulas of Guatemala during the mass being offered by Cardinal Alvaro Ramazzini at St. Patrick's Church in Manhattan, New York, on January 7, 2024. Today, Guatemalans are commemorating the Black Christ of Esquipulas, located 85 miles east of Guatemala City. Cardinal Alvaro Ramazzini, from the diocese of Huehuetenango, is currently outside Guatemala after leaving in early December upon hearing that the Guatemalan government had sent a ''strong letter'' against him to the Vatican. Rumors of an arrest warrant have been circulating since he expressed concerns about a potential coup to prevent Guatemala's elected president, Bernardo Arevalo, from assuming power on January 14, 2024.
