On September 7, 2024, in Mittenwald, Bavaria, the sheep make their annual descent from the summer pastures, filling the streets with the echo of bleating and the gentle shuffle of hooves. The herd, thick with wool and motion, moves slowly through the violin-making village, led by the watchful eyes of the shepherds. Young shepherd boys, dressed in traditional attire with suspenders and felt hats, proudly lend their hands, guiding the flock with wooden staffs in hand. As the sheep meander through the village, vibrant window boxes of flowers add bursts of color to the scene, contrasting with the earthy tones of the herd. The village, nestled against the backdrop of the Bavarian Alps, takes on a timeless quality, where tradition and daily life intertwine seamlessly. The destination is the Schafstadl above the Groblalm, a familiar place for both the shepherds and the sheep as they prepare for the transition to cooler seasons. This procession, both a necessity and a celebration, brings the community together, marking the close of summer and the promise of autumn. The scene captures the essence of rural life in the Alps, where the rhythm of nature dictates the flow of life, and the generations work side by side, keeping traditions alive.

A young woman holds a placard reading 'Order [crossed] Freedom, Equality, Brotherhood'. Between 3,000 and 5,000 protesters march in Toulouse, France, on October 1, 2024, called by the FSU, the CGT, and the SUD unions to protest against Macron's choice of Michel Barnier (conservative) as prime minister. Unions call this protest to remind President Macron that the first coalition elected in June in the French Parliament is the New Popular Front. They also lead for better wages. They accuse the president of ignoring election results by naming Michel Barnier (LR, Right) as prime minister. The left, led by LFI, accuses Macron of a denial of democracy and stealing the election after Macron refuses to pick the candidate of the New Popular Front (NFP) alliance that comes top in the July vote. The left and the far-left unionize in a new umbrella called 'Nouveau Front Populaire' (i.e., 'New Popular Front'). President Emmanuel Macron calls a snap legislative election in June and is defeated. The new prime minister will try to govern with a coalition of Macronist and rightists. The RN (far right) says it will judge on pieces. Similar protests take place elsewhere in France.

A protester holds a placard reading 'Every police is good to write ACAB'. It is a play on words in French: 'police' means both 'the police' and 'fonts'. Between 3,000 and 5,000 protesters march in Toulouse, France, on October 1, 2024, called by the FSU, the CGT, and the SUD unions to protest against Macron's choice of Michel Barnier (conservative) as prime minister.
