House Republicans meet to select a Speaker
Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) arrives at a meeting of House Republicans to choose a House Speaker to succeed Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). Scalise is currently the lead candidate to succeed McCarthy, who was ousted from his position October 3, 2023. There are currently 221 Republican Representatives in the House, and 217 votes are required to elect a Speaker. Scalise - or any other candidate - must receive near unanimous Republican support.
